Because your skincare deserves a little detective work… and maybe a magnifying glass. 🔎💜

Okay, friends. I have a confession. I have become THAT person.

You know the one….the woman who picks up a skincare bottle, flips it over, squints at the ingredient list, and starts asking questions.

“What is this ingredient? Why is it in here? What does it actually DO? And, perhaps most importantly, does my skin even need it?“

Some of these ingredient names look like they belong in a chemistry textbook. And the print? Good grief. At this stage of life, I need my readers, decent lighting, and possibly a forensic laboratory. 😂

But here’s something I’ve learned after spending a considerable amount of time exploring skincare, ingredients, and the science behind them.

What goes ON our skin deserves just as much thought as the promises printed on the front of the bottle.

And that, my friends, is where our investigation begins.

🔎 Exhibit A: Ingredients Matter. But So Does the Formula.

We’ve all seen the marketing.

  • “Miracle cream!”
  • “Turn back the clock!”
  • “Look 20 years younger!”

First of all, I’m not particularly interested in looking 20 years younger. I’ve worked hard for these years, thank you very much. 😉

What I AM interested in is understanding what I’m putting on my skin and whether those ingredients actually serve a purpose. Because here’s something worth knowing:

An ingredient isn’t automatically wonderful because it’s natural, and it isn’t automatically harmful because its name sounds like something from high school chemistry.

What matters is the science: the concentration, the formulation, how ingredients work together, how they’re preserved, and whether they’re appropriate for YOUR skin.

For example:

  • Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain water, supporting skin hydration.
  • Niacinamide can help support the skin barrier and improve the appearance of uneven tone.
  • Glycerin is a hardworking humectant that helps keep skin hydrated.
  • Ceramides help support the skin’s protective barrier and reduce moisture loss.

And that’s just the beginning! The more I learn, the more fascinated I become. Because skincare isn’t simply about finding the longest ingredient list or the fanciest jar.

It’s about understanding what our skin needs.

💜 Exhibit B: Why ABBI Caught My Attention

This is one of the reasons I fell in love with ABBI.

ABBI is a French personalized skincare company that takes a different approach to caring for our skin. Rather than assuming everyone needs the same products, ABBI uses technology and skin analysis to help make recommendations based on individual skin characteristics. And I LOVE that!

Here’s what makes the approach interesting to me:

🔬 AI-powered skin analysis

ABBI’s Skin Skan uses AI technology to evaluate approximately 20 visible skin markers and help identify individual skincare needs.

It’s free, takes about 90 seconds, and gives you a starting point for understanding your skin.

🇫🇷 Personalized skincare made in France

ABBI offers custom In-Lab creams formulated for individual skincare profiles.

Rather than choosing a moisturizer simply because the label says “mature skin,” there’s an opportunity to choose a formula informed by what YOUR skin is showing.

🌿 Ingredients chosen with intention

ABBI’s approach emphasizes selecting ingredients and formulations for specific skincare goals, including hydration, comfort, radiance, and the appearance of firmness.

And while I appreciate thoughtful ingredient choices, I also believe every product deserves to be evaluated on its complete formula, not just a few impressive ingredients highlighted on the label.

💧 A routine that doesn’t require 15 steps

Can we talk about this one? Because I have absolutely no desire to spend half my morning standing in front of the bathroom mirror layering 14 different serums.

I have things to do. Dogs to love. A life to live. 😂

I appreciate that ABBI offers a way to build a skincare routine around individual needs rather than encouraging everyone to use everything. And sometimes, simpler really is better.

🔎 Exhibit C: Your Skin Is Allowed to Change

Here’s something I wish more women understood: Your skin at 35 isn’t necessarily the same as your skin at 55, 65, or 85.

And even within the same year, your skin can respond differently to changes in weather, hormones, stress, health, medications, and daily habits. As we age, changes in our skin barrier, natural oil production, and moisture retention can affect how our skin looks and feels.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong.

It means our skin is living right alongside us.

Think about everything you’ve experienced. The laughter. The tears. The sunshine. The sleepless nights. The caregiving. The celebrations. The seasons when life asked more of you than you thought you had to give. Your skin has been along for the entire ride.

And I happen to think it deserves a little understanding rather than another lecture about looking younger. 😄

💜 Exhibit D: Almost Two Years of Our Own Skincare Investigation

Now, here’s where this gets personal. Jeff and I started using ABBI almost two years ago. At first, we were trying products, learning about ingredients, and seeing how our skin responded. And somewhere along the way, trying became our regular routine.

We’ve been genuinely happy with our experience. In fact, I’ve saved most of our empty bottles. Yes. Actual empty skincare bottles. Apparently, my investigative tendencies extend to collecting evidence. 😂 But those bottles represent something meaningful to me.

✔️ Consistency.

✔️ Curiosity.

Finding products we enjoy using.

And discovering that skincare doesn’t have to feel complicated or overwhelming to become a lovely part of everyday self-care.

Our experience is personal, of course. Everyone’s skin is different, and what works beautifully for one person may not be the best choice for another. Which brings me right back to why I appreciate personalization.

🌿 The Bigger Investigation: What Does Caring for Ourselves Really Look Like?

If you’ve spent any time here at The Care & Glow Collective, you know I believe skincare is about more than skincare. It’s one small part of a much bigger conversation.

Many of us have spent decades caring for everyone around us. Raising families. Supporting partners. Building careers. Caring for aging parents. Showing up for friends. Navigating unexpected changes.

And somewhere in all of that, our own needs can quietly slide toward the bottom of the list. I know that story. I’ve lived parts of it.

And here’s what I’ve come to believe:

Caring for ourselves doesn’t have to be extravagant, expensive, or complicated to matter.

Sometimes it’s a walk. Sometimes it’s a few minutes of quiet. Sometimes it’s finally scheduling that appointment we’ve been putting off. And sometimes it’s washing our face at the end of a long day, applying a cream that feels wonderful, and giving ourselves a moment of care.

Not because we need fixing. Because we’re worth caring for, too.

🔎 One More Clue: Curiosity Can Open Unexpected Doors

Something else happened when I started learning about ABBI. I discovered a community of people who enjoyed asking questions, learning about skincare, sharing experiences, and helping others.

And eventually, that curiosity grew into an opportunity for me to become a Founding ABBI Ambassador. I didn’t begin this journey because I wanted to convince everyone they needed another bottle of something.

I began because I genuinely enjoyed the products, appreciated the personalized approach, and loved the conversations that came from sharing what I was learning.

And I still do.

For someone who enjoys skincare, education, and connecting with people, ABBI also offers an ambassador business opportunity. That may interest some people. Others may simply want help understanding their skin or finding a cleanser they love.

Both are perfectly wonderful reasons to start a conversation.

No pressure. No complicated pitch. Just curiosity and information.

💜 Case Closed? Not Even Close!

The more I learn about skincare, the more questions I have. And I think that’s a good thing. Because we don’t have to become cosmetic chemists to make thoughtful choices.

We can learn a little at a time. Ask better questions. Look beyond the marketing. Understand our own skin. And find routines that support the lives we’re actually living.

So here’s my question for you:

When you’re choosing skincare, what matters most?

🌿 Understanding the ingredients?

💧 Finding something that works for your skin?

🔬 Learning about the science?

💜 Keeping your routine simple?

Or are you like me, and the answer is a little bit of everything? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

And if you’re curious about ABBI, personalized skincare, the free Skin Skan, or even the ambassador opportunity, I’m always happy to have a conversation. No magnifying glass required. Although I can’t promise I won’t have mine handy. 😂

A Little Glow Note – Your skin tells a story, but it doesn’t need to tell the whole story of who you are. Care for it with kindness. Learn what it needs. Remember, taking care of yourself is never about erasing the life you’ve lived. It’s about honoring the person who’s lived it.
