The Stories We Tell Ourselves: How to Rewrite Your Inner Narrative
We all have a voice in our head. Sometimes it cheers us on, reminding us we’re strong and capable. But other times? It can be our harshest critic. Mine even has a name — I call her Agnes — and she shows up with this stuffy, know-it-all professor voice that loves to point out every flaw. That quiet whisper of “you’re not enough” or “you’ll never get this right” can creep in before I even notice.
The truth is, the stories we tell ourselves shape the way we see the world — and ourselves. The good news? Stories can be rewritten.
The Power of Our Inner Story
Our minds are meaning-makers. Every situation — big or small — comes with an automatic story attached. It’s not just what happens, but how we explain it to ourselves, that shapes how we feel and respond.
Think about it:
- You burn dinner. One story says, “I’m terrible at this; I can’t do anything right.” Another says, “Oops, everyone burns a meal now and then — guess it’s takeout night!”
- You miss a day of skincare. One story says, “I’ve ruined my routine; why even bother anymore?” Another says, “One day doesn’t undo progress. I’ll just pick it back up tomorrow.”
- As a caregiver, a tough moment with a loved one could turn into, “I’m failing them,” or it could be, “This is hard, but I’m showing up the best I can.”
Same event. Different story. Different outcome.
Our inner narrative sets the tone: it can keep us stuck in guilt, shame, or self-doubt — or it can free us to keep moving with compassion and courage.
And here’s the beautiful part: stories aren’t fixed. They can be rewritten. Every time we notice an old, unhelpful script and replace it with one that honors our effort, we create a little more space for peace, joy, and resilience.
🌸 Kindness Key: Every time you change the story you tell yourself, you unlock new strength and possibility.
My Personal Take
I’ve had plenty of seasons where my inner story leaned negative. As a caregiver, I often told myself I had to be strong all the time — no cracks, no crying, no rest, no mistakes. And if I slipped up? That’s when Agnes (my inner critic) would step right up to the mic and deliver a full-on TED Talk “You’re not doing enough. You’re not enough. And look — she’s doing it better than you.” Honestly, if self-doubt gave out standing ovations, Agnes would’ve had a sold-out world tour.
But here’s what I’ve learned: just because my mind tells a story doesn’t mean it’s true. I started catching those old narratives and gently rewriting them: “I’m human, I’m learning, I’m showing up the best I can.”
Even in skincare, I used to think, “If I don’t do my routine perfectly, I’ve failed.” Now I remind myself: “Consistency matters more than perfection. Every small step is care for me.”
🌿 Gentle Reminder: Notice the words you tell yourself today — they hold the power to heal or to harm.

Here are a few common “old stories” we tell ourselves — and gentle, uplifting replacements:
- Old Story: “I always mess things up.”
New Story: “I’m learning as I go, and mistakes are part of growth.” - Old Story: “I’m not doing enough.”
New Story: “I’m showing up the best I can, and that matters.” - Old Story: “If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t count.”
New Story: “Consistency matters more than perfection. Every step counts.” - Old Story: “I should have it all together by now.”
New Story: “I’m exactly where I need to be for this season of life.” - Old Story: “Taking time for myself is selfish.”
New Story: “Caring for myself gives me strength to care for others.” - Old Story: “I can’t handle this.”
New Story: “This is hard, but I can take it one step at a time.” - Old Story: “I’ll never be as good as them.”
New Story: “My journey is my own, and that’s what makes it meaningful.”
Your Story Matters
At the end of the day, the stories we tell ourselves matter far more than the ones others tell about us. They shape how we show up in relationships, in work, in caregiving, in life, — and even in how we care for ourselves.
