Permission to Be Imperfect: Embracing Progress Over Perfection
I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent more years than I’d like to admit chasing the idea of “perfect.” The perfect plan, the perfect response, the perfect outcome. And you know what? It’s exhausting. Somewhere along the way, I realized that perfection isn’t only unrealistic — it’s also overrated.
Life isn’t meant to be flawless. It’s meant to be lived.
The Trap of Perfection
Perfection has a sneaky way of holding us back. We wait until the “right” moment, until things look just so, or until we feel completely ready. And in doing so, we often miss out on the beauty of progress.
I’ve fallen into that trap in so many ways. When I was caregiving for my parents, I wanted everything to be just right — the meals balanced and nutritious, the appointments perfectly organized, even the conversations calm and supportive. I thought if I could get it all right, maybe it would make things easier for them — and for me.
🌸 Kindness Key: Replace “perfect” with “present” — that’s where your true power lives.
But life has a way of laughing at our best-laid plans. Sometimes dinner didn’t turn out (yes, I’ve burnt food more times than I’d like to admit). Sometimes a doctor’s appointment went sideways, or emotions ran high when we were all tired. And guess what? The world didn’t end. We just grabbed takeout, had a grumpy laugh, and carried on.
The same thing shows up in skincare. I once set out to have the “perfect” evening routine — candles lit, spa music playing, every ABBI product lined up like little soldiers waiting their turn. It was going to be flawless. Until the phone rang, the dogs barked, and by the time I got back, I couldn’t remember if I’d already applied my serum… so I did it again. (Double hydrated, anyone?)
Looking back, the best moments weren’t the flawless ones. They were the messy, imperfect ones — laughing over burnt food, holding hands in the waiting room, or realizing that my skin didn’t actually mind two layers of serum. Those moments weren’t perfect, but they were real. And real is what mattered.
The Gift of Imperfection
Here’s the truth: imperfect action is still progress. In fact, it’s often the most meaningful kind. Every stumble, every messy middle, every “oops, let’s try that again” moment teaches us something. It’s in those places where we grow, adapt, and build resilience.
And sometimes, letting go of perfection gives us the freedom to enjoy the process. Think about it — when you give yourself permission to be imperfect, you also permit yourself to laugh, to learn, and to try again.
My Gentle Reminder to You
One of my favorite mindset shifts is asking myself: “Am I moving forward?“ Not “Am I doing this perfectly?“ Just “Am I taking one step?“
That single question helps me focus on what matters most. Because a step forward — even a wobbly one — is still movement toward growth, healing, or whatever goal I’m working on.
Progress Over Perfection
If you’re waiting until everything is perfect before you start, let this be your sign: you don’t have to. You’re allowed to show up just as you are, with what you have, right now. Progress is what changes your life, not perfection.
So take the next step, however imperfect it may feel. You’re learning, growing, and becoming stronger with each move you make. And that, my friend, is more than enough.
🪞 Progress, not perfection, is worth honoring. What’s one thing you can thank yourself for today?
