The Christmas Toast at 10am: How Traditions Become Bridges Across Generations

Dear friend,

There’s a moment every Christmas morning when everything stops.

It doesn’t matter what’s happening — gifts half-opened, food still cooking, conversations mid-sentence. At 10am, we pause. We gather wherever we are. And we raise our Santa mugs — usually filled with eggnog (and maybe something a little stronger for the adults 😉).

And we toast.

💞 To family.

💞 To love.

💞 To those who are with us — and those who are no longer here.

This tradition has lived in my family for generations. And every year, it reminds me that legacy isn’t something we store away. It’s something we practice.

When a Moment Becomes a Memory

I didn’t always understand how meaningful this tradition was. When you grow up with something, it feels ordinary — just “the way we do things.”

But as the years passed, and as we lost parents and grandparents, that 10am toast took on a deeper weight.

It became:

❣️ A pause for gratitude

❣️ A shared breath in the middle of celebration

❣️ A quiet way of saying, We remember you. You’re still part of us.

In that moment, the room feels full — even when some seats are empty.

Gentle Reminder

Traditions don’t have to be elaborate or perfect to matter.

They just have to be repeated with love.

Why Traditions Matter More Than We Realize

Traditions are living memories. They don’t sit in boxes or albums — they show up year after year, carrying meaning forward.

They teach future generations:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What your family values are

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 How you celebrate

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who mattered enough to remember

And often, they become the moments people miss the most.

Not the gifts.

Not the decorations.

But the pause. The ritual. The togetherness.

Imagine If…
  • Imagine if your children could describe your family traditions decades from now.
  • Imagine if those traditions still carried names, stories, and meaning.
  • Imagine if remembering felt joyful — not heavy.

That’s what traditions make possible.

The Stories Inside the Tradition

Every year, that toast brings stories with it.

Who started it.
Who always poured the drinks.
Who raised their mug the highest.
Who we’re remembering now.

Those stories don’t live anywhere unless we choose to hold them.

That’s when I realized: Traditions need stories the same way photos do.

Without them, the meaning fades quietly.

A Gentle Legacy Prompt

Ask yourself this today: “Which tradition would my family miss the most if it stopped?”

That tradition is asking to be remembered — and preserved.

Preserving Traditions While They’re Still Alive

You don’t need to wait for a milestone or a loss to save these moments.

Here are a few simple ways to begin:

  • 📸 Photograph the tradition as it happens
  • 🎙️ Record a short voice note explaining why it matters
  • ✍️ Write down who started it and how it’s changed
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Capture different generations sharing what it means to them

These small acts turn a moment into a bridge.

From Memory Keeper to Legacy Steward

Over time, I’ve learned that traditions are one of the most powerful parts of a family’s legacy. They hold emotion, repetition, and belonging — all in one place.

Preserving them isn’t about freezing them in time.
It’s about giving them roots — so they can grow.

That’s what being a legacy steward looks like to me.

💡 Remember: One day, someone in your family will talk about the way you did things.
They’ll remember the pauses, the rituals, the moments that brought everyone together.

If you want those moments to live on, start by naming them.
Saving them.
Honoring them.
