I came across a sentence recently that stopped me for a minute: Enjoy the gift of this ordinary day.
Not the vacation day. Not the birthday. Not the day something amazing happens. Not the day when the house is finally clean, everyone is getting along, your inbox is empty, you’ve accomplished everything on your list, and someone else has magically figured out dinner.
Just…this ordinary day.
And maybe that’s exactly why those words got me. Because we spend so much of our lives waiting for the special days.
We take pictures of the celebrations. We count down to vacations. We remember weddings, graduations, holidays, births, anniversaries, and all those beautiful milestone moments that become markers in our stories.
But when I think about the pieces of my life I miss the most, some of them weren’t big moments at all.
They were incredibly ordinary….A phone call. Someone sitting in their usual chair. A familiar voice coming from the other room. Dinner around the table. Running an errand together. Walking into a house and knowing exactly who would be there. Hearing a story you’ve already heard approximately 47 times.
At the time, none of it seemed particularly remarkable.
It was just Thursday.
And then life changes. People grow up. Kids leave home. Parents get older. Relationships change. Bodies change. Homes change.
Sometimes people we love are no longer sitting in that chair.
And suddenly, one of those completely ordinary Thursdays would feel like an extraordinary gift.
Maybe Ordinary Isn’t Ordinary at All
I think we’re sometimes so busy trying to create a meaningful life that we forget we’re already standing right in the middle of one.
Maybe meaning isn’t always found in the big moments. Maybe it’s also in your morning coffee or the dog following you into the bathroom because apparently privacy is no longer part of your life.
How about the text from your kid. The grocery-store run. The person beside you on the couch. The sunlight coming through the kitchen window. The conversation that didn’t seem important enough to remember. Even folding laundry.
Okay. Maybe we don’t have to get carried away. 😂
But you know what I mean. There is life happening here.
Today.
In the middle of all this ordinary.
We Don’t Have to Pretend Every Day Is Wonderful
And I think this part matters.
Enjoying the gift of an ordinary day doesn’t mean forcing gratitude when life is hard.
Some ordinary days are exhausting.
Some involve caregiving, appointments, bills, worry, grief, work, dishes, responsibilities, and approximately 392 things needing your attention at the same time.
Some days aren’t particularly enjoyable.
Gratitude doesn’t require us to pretend otherwise.
Maybe it’s simply learning to notice one little piece of the day while we’re living it.
This is good.
This cup of coffee is good.
This conversation is good.
This breeze feels good.
I’m glad this person is here.
I’m glad I’m here.
No grand revelation required.
Just noticing.
The Days We Are Living Now Will Become Our Stories
That’s the part I keep coming back to.
Someday, we may look back at the season we’re living right now and remember things we barely notice today.
The kitchen. The car. The neighborhood. The people who call us. The routines that occasionally drive us bananas.
Even the version of ourselves staring back from the mirror. Someday we may miss her, too.
Which makes me wonder…What if we didn’t wait until an ordinary day became a memory before recognizing what it held?
What if we looked around every once in a while and thought:
”Oh. This is my life.”
Not the life I’m waiting to begin. Not the life I’ll enjoy when things calm down. Not the life I’ll appreciate someday.
This one. Right here. Beautifully imperfect. A little messy. Still unfolding.
And worthy of being noticed.
So Today…
Maybe you don’t need to make today extraordinary. Maybe you don’t need to accomplish more, fix anything, reinvent yourself, or create some Instagram-worthy moment. Maybe today can simply be what it is.
An ordinary Thursday. A cup of something warm. People you love. Work to do. Laundry waiting. A dog underfoot. A sunset you almost didn’t notice. A laugh you weren’t expecting. A few quiet minutes that belong only to you.
Whatever your ordinary looks like today, I hope you notice a little piece of it.
Because I’ve lived enough life now to know something I didn’t fully understand when I was younger:
Ordinary days don’t stay ordinary forever.
One day, some of the moments we’re living right now will become the stories we tell, the photographs we treasure, and the memories we’d give almost anything to step back into for five minutes.
So while we’re here…while the coffee is still warm, while that familiar voice is still calling from the other room, while today is still today…
Enjoy the gift of this ordinary day.
🪞 Remember: You don’t have to make today extraordinary for it to be worth remembering. Sometimes the greatest gift is simply realizing you’re living it while it’s still here.
